This graphic was created in observance of National Medal of Honor Day 2026 and features three Medal of Honor recipients with strong ties to Fort Polk.
National Medal of Honor Day is observed annually on March 25. Established by Congress in 1990, the day honors the courage, sacrifice, and patriotism of Medal of Honor recipients, recognizing those who have demonstrated extraordinary valor in combat. March 25 commemorates the anniversary of the first Medal of Honor presentation in 1863, when the award was given to six members of Andrews’ Raiders during the Civil War. The observance pays tribute to all recipients—past and present—and serves as a reminder of their selfless service in defense of the United States.
