FRANCE -- An American gun crew from Regimental Headquarters Company, 23rd Infantry, fires a 37mm gun during an advance against German entrenched positions in France, 1918. The 23rd Infantry Regiment of the U.S. Army was part of V Corps in World War I during 1918. The 23rd Infantry Regiment was assigned to the 2nd Infantry Division, which was under the command of V Corps for key operations in 1918, including the Battle of Saint-Mihiel (September 1918) and the Meuse-Argonne Offensive (October–November 1918). The 2nd Division, which included the 9th, 23rd, 5th Marines, and 6th Marines regiments, operated under V Corps during these major campaigns as part of the American Expeditionary Forces (AEF).
