A 360-degree video camera image illustrates a towboat traveling through the remains of the landside chamber, while a crane removes rubble and a drilling rig prepares holes for the placement of explosives in the removal of the lock chambers by controlled implosion, at Locks and Dam 3 on the Monongahela River in Elizabeth, Pennsylvania, Aug. 6, 2025.
Demolition of the dam and chamber walls restored a continuous riverway stretching thirty miles from Charleroi to Braddock, Pennsylvania. This portion of the Lower Monongahela Project is expected to last until 2027, bringing the over 100-year old story of one of the oldest functioning locks and dam in the nation to a close.
