April is Autism Acceptance Month, a time to promote understanding, inclusion, and respect for people on the autism spectrum. Autism, or autism spectrum disorder (ASD), affects how individuals communicate, interact socially, and experience the world. It’s estimated to impact 1 in 31 children and 1 in 45 adults in the U.S.
Autism often coexists with other conditions like ADHD, anxiety, depression, gastrointestinal issues, and sleep disorders. Symptoms can vary widely and may present differently based on sex, age, or individual coping strategies—leading to under-diagnosis, especially in girls and adults who’ve learned to “mask” their traits.
Autism is a lifelong condition, and each stage of life can bring new strengths and challenges. With early intervention, ongoing support, and greater public understanding, autistic individuals can thrive in their own unique ways. Acceptance starts with awareness—and grows through action.
