The Army Medical Corps was established on July 27, 1775, when the Continental Congress authorized the creation of a “hospital” to care for the Continental Army. Today, the Corps is composed of a wide range of medical specialties and subspecialties found in civilian medicine.
Medical Corps officers serve in diverse roles, including clinical care, executive leadership, academic teaching, assignments at military medical facilities, deployable combat units and field hospitals, and medical research and development laboratories.
The mission of the Army Medical Corps is to ensure a “Ready Medical Force” and a “Medically Ready Force” by strategically managing the assignment and development of its officers. Its goal is to place the right Medical Corps officer in the right position—balancing the needs of the Army with each officer’s professional development and personal growth.
