This graphic was created to commemorate the Battle of Tarawa, which took place during World War II, Nov. 20-23, 1943. The Battle of Tarawa was a fierce battle where U.S. Marines captured a fortified Japanese atoll in the Gilbert Islands. “Casualties – many; percentage dead – unknown; combat efficiency - we are winning,” said U.S. Marine Corps Col. David Shoup during the battle. This graphic was created using Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator including an edited painting by Tom Lovell. (U.S. Marine Corps Graphic by Lance Cpl. Matthew Benfield)
