This graphic illustration highlights the flag raising on Iwo Jima, created on Feb. 20th, 2024. Two flags rose on top of Mount Suribachi, and this one was immortalized by Joe Rosenthal’s photo on Feb. 23, 1945. The battle of Iwo Jima has become known as the bloodiest battle in Marine Corps history, but the flag raising has since then become a symbol of Marines’ resolve even against formidable odds.
