ST. MIHAIL, France - U.S. Army V Corps Soldiers pass through the remnants of the French town of St. Mihail, Sept. 13, 1918. The St. Mihiel Offensive (September 12-16, 1918) was a major World War I operation led by the American Expeditionary Forces (AEF) under General John J. Pershing, aimed at reducing the German-held St. Mihiel salient in northeastern France. V Corps, part of the U.S. First Army, played a critical role in this battle, marking one of the first major American-led offensives of the war. By September 13, V Corps linked up with IV Corps near Vigneulles, effectively closing the salient. The rapid advance caught retreating Germans, resulting in thousands of prisoners and captured equipment. (U.S. Army photo illustration by Sgt. Devin Klecan)
