On this day in 1882, the first U.S. Navy diving school was established in Newport, Rhode Island. Chief Gunner's Mate Jacob Anderson's two-week course laid the foundation for the elite diving force we know today. From underwater construction and salvage to explosive ordnance disposal and special operations, Navy Divers are essential to our national security. According to the U.S. Naval Undersea Museum, then-Naval Torpedo Station Keyport held its first diving instruction class in 1918. Divers were taught everything from torpedo recovery to underwater ship repair and pier inspection.
