Originally activated on September 16, 1942, at Camp Elliot, San Diego, California, the 3d Marine Division has a rich history of service in World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, Operation Iraqi Freedom, Operation Enduring Freedom, and Operation Tomodachi. Today, the Division continues to serve as a vital force within the first island chain, tasked with securing, seizing, and defending key maritime terrain to deny and disrupt adversary actions in support of the Fleet, the Joint Force, and allied and partnered forces.
