Physician Assistant Shawna Wilkerson, from the Bayne-Jones Army Community Hospital's Patient Centered Medical Home, is one of the providers at the forefront of leveraging new technologies to enhance the patient experience. BJACH is implementing "Ambient Listening," an advanced and secure technology that allows providers to focus more on their patients and less on their computer screens.
The technology acts as a private assistant for providers, securely capturing the conversation during an appointment and automatically drafting clinical notes. This innovation reduces the administrative burden on medical staff and allows them to engage more directly with their patients.
"Patients get more face time instead of having a provider focused on a screen," said Wilkerson. "Their story is captured more completely—improving continuity of care."
Ambient Listening is part of the Military Health System's investment in advancing the readiness of our medical force and the warfighters they serve. It improves the quality of care by ensuring that clinical notes are detailed and accurate, while also promoting greater work-life balance for providers by reducing after-hours charting.
Patient privacy is a top priority. The technology is secure, and patients must provide verbal consent before it can be used during a medical appointment. Patients can opt-out at any time.
