The 38th Air Defense Artillery Brigade marks its 108th anniversary June 21, 2026.
The brigade was constituted June 21, 1918, as the 38th Artillery Brigade, Coast Artillery Corps, and deployed to France during World War I. After the war, the brigade returned and demobilized.
In the following decades, the brigade evolved alongside the field of air defense artillery. It reconstituted in 1933 as the 38th Coast Artillery Brigade, then became the 38th Anti-Aircraft Brigade and deployed to the European Theater in support of the Third Army during World War II. The brigade's units earned battle streamers for the Normandy, Ardennes-Alsace, Rhineland, Northern France and Central Europe campaigns.
The brigade inactivated at the end of World War II and returned in 1960 to support the Eighth U.S. Army Air Defense Command in the Pacific as the 38th Artillery Brigade (Air Defense). In 1972, it was redesignated the 38th Air Defense Artillery Brigade and mobilized to the Republic of Korea, working with the 314th Air Division, U.S. Air Force; the Combat Air Command, Republic of Korea Air Force; and the Republic of Korea Army Air Defense Command at Osan Air Base for nearly a decade.
The brigade activated most recently Oct. 16, 2018, more than a century after its original creation, and continues to defend skies in the Indo-Pacific region as the Pacific Guardians. While its role has changed from coastal defense to integrated air and missile defense, the brigade stands ready to defend the nation, allies, partners and a free and open Indo-Pacific.
