Staff Sgt. Shayne A. Cherry, representing U.S. Army Special Operations Command, hurries to his next battle drill station to fire at targets in a battle drill as part of the weapons qualification test, Oct. 4, at Fort Lee, Va. Cherry and 11 other non-commissioned officers are competing for the title of Department of the Army Best Warrior. The 12 NCOs and an additional 12 Soldiers will spend this week at Fort Lee competing in events such as the board, land navigation and warrior tasks. The winners will be announced at a ceremony, Oct. 8, in the District of Columbia. Cherry is currently assigned as an infantryman in the 75th Ranger Regiment Special Troops Battalion located at Fort Benning, Ga. He hails from Monroe, Nev. Cherry has served in the Army for six years.
