A group of U.S. Navy personnel in NWU (Navy Working Uniform) digital camouflage are gathered in what appears to be a shipyard or naval facility. Several individuals are wearing hard hats in white and blue colors, suggesting a safety-regulated industrial environment. An American flag is visible on a large white structure in the background.

SAN DIEGO (March 15, 2017) Vice Adm. Tom Rowden, commander, Naval Surface Force, U.S. Pacific Fleet, and Cmdr. Joshua Menzel, commanding officer of Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS Spruance (DDG 111) speak with the ship’s crew prior to presenting Spruance with the 2016 Vice Admiral Thomas H. Copeman III Material Readiness Award. The award is given to ships for high levels of performance during material inspections, and recognizes the crew’s efforts. The award was named for Copeman, a former commander of SURFPAC, who believed that material readiness was the foundation to the Navy’s warfighting ability.
