BAUMHOLDER, Germany – Soldiers of the Knights Brigade joined members of their sister units across Smith Barracks May 21 for a Memorial Day run to honor service members who made the ultimate sacrifice in defense of the nation.
“We're going to run for those who've made the ultimate sacrifice. When you feel like you're hurting and want to stop, just think of our fallen,” said Command Sgt. Maj. Jimmy Ingram, 16th Sustainment Brigade, addressing Soldiers gathered on Minick Field. He encouraged participants to push themselves in honor of those who gave their all. Army Chaplain (CPT) Byeong “Mike” Kim, 95th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion, delivered the invocation before the run.
“Today we honor the brave men and women who gave their lives for our freedom as they fought courageously to defend liberty,” Kim said. “As we run together this morning, remind us who we are, what we stand for, and who we serve beside. May this run engrain in our hearts the commitment to fight for one another, our families, and our nation. Protect every Soldier from injury, and bless this event with safety, unity, and purpose.”
While awaiting the start of a 3.5-mile Memorial Day run, Col. Christopher Richardson, Commander of the 16th Sustainment Brigade, delivered final remarks before the start, emphasizing the significance of the event.
“Every formation, every Soldier represents the strength of our nation,” Richardson said. “Every mile, every step represents resiliency. It is our commitment as Soldiers to be part of something greater than ourselves. When we do what is required in defense of our nation, we do so on the backs of those who came before us. Each of us plays a key role in securing freedom—not just for America, but for our allies and those who cannot defend themselves. Carry on the legacy entrusted to you and forge your own.”
Leaders from every formation took turns calling out Army cadence to motivate Soldiers and keep them in step during the run. Richardson joined in, energizing junior Soldiers, as it is uncommon for officers—let alone a brigade commander—to lead cadence. Richardson said he embraces a holistic approach to leadership, preferring to inspire Soldiers through engagement rather than traditional NCO or officer roles alone.
As the run concluded, formations gathered for a group photo and final remarks, including words from the brigade’s long-time community partners.
“I’m honored to have participated in this run with you all this morning,” said Bernd Alsfasser, district mayor of Baumholder. Alsfasser has often served as a bridge between the U.S. Army and the surrounding German community, strengthening the partnership between Soldiers and local residents.
