SAN DIEGO (Nov. 13, 2020) – Destroyer Squadron 23 (DESRON 23) held a change of command aboard the guided missile destroyer USS Pinckney (DDG 91) Friday, Nov. 13.
The Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71), departed Naval Air Station North Island to test the ship’s capabilities and to complete Fleet Replacement Squadron Carrier Qualifications (FRS CQ) Sept. 23, 2020.
This is the first time the ship has been underway since its return from deployment July 9 where it completed a scheduled deployment to the U.S. 7th Fleet area of operations.
Aviation Ordnanceman First Class Nicholas Beemer was selected as the 2020 John Finn Aviation Ordnanceman of the Year.
Beemer, assigned to USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71) was nominated by his chain of command because of his professionalism and teamwork with special emphasis placed on sustained, superior performance within the aviation ordnanceman community.

Capt. Eric J. Anduze relieved Capt. Carlos Sardiello to become Theodore Roosevelt’s 17th commanding officer.
The USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71) and USS Nimitz (CVN 68) strike groups commenced dual carrier flight operations in the Philippine Sea June 21.
The ships and aircraft assigned to both strike groups began coordinated operations in international waters demonstrating the United States’ unique capability to operate multiple carrier strike groups in close proximity.
