Recognizing the need for an increase in special forces and unconventional warfare during the Vietnam War, President John F. Kennedy directed the establishment of the United States Navy SEAL Teams 1 and 2, Jan. 1, 1962. For more than 60 years, Navy SEALs have been involved in every major U.S. conflict and are the U.S. Department of Defense's premier maritime special operations force, capable of operating in any environment around the world.
