SAN DIEGO (Aug. 19, 2025) — Surgeons with the Maxillofacial Restoration Program shape and prepare segments of a patient’s leg bone (fibula) during the free-flap harvest phase of the surgery—where bone and its blood supply are taken from the leg for transplant—during a jaw-in-a-day procedure at Naval Medical Center San Diego. The bone is carefully cut, shaped, and fitted with a titanium plate to replace the diseased portion of the patient’s jaw. (DoW photo by Regena Kowitz)
