SAN DIEGO (Aug. 19, 2025) —Lt. Cmdr. Austin LaBanc, chief resident of the ear, nose, and throat program and member of the Maxillofacial Restoration Program team at Naval Medical Center San Diego, removes a section of bone from the patient’s lower leg as part of a jaw-in-a-day reconstructive surgery. The long incision exposes the fibula so the team can attach a custom 3D-printed cutting guide, which helps them shape the bone and its blood vessels precisely before transplanting it to rebuild the patient’s jaw during the same operation.
