RAF FAIRFORD, England — The bed of a pickup truck grew heavier with each stop. Cylinders of pavement lay stacked across the tailgate, their freshly cut edges revealing dark bands of asphalt and lighter layers of aggregateand concrete normally hidden beneath RAF Fairford’s flightline. Nearby, water and gray slurry pooled around a drill as it cut through another section of the surface.
Members of the Air Force Civil Engineer Center’s Airfield Pavement Evaluation Team pulled the core free, documented it and loaded it into the truck before moving on. Throughout September 2026, the five-person team repeated the process across the base as part of a comprehensive assessment of the installation’s airfield infrastructure.

While many logistics units focus on supporting a single installation, the 426th ABS Logistics Flight supports military organizations operating throughout Norway. The team works with U.S. and Norwegian partners to coordinate transportation, customs clearance and cargo movements for a wide range of missions, including Navy underwater research projects, Marine Corps equipment programs and joint military exercises.
