Marine veteran Jacob Stearns from Palm Bay, Fla., will compete in the 2012 Warrior Games in Colorado Springs, Colo., April 30-May 5. Stearns, 23, will compete in wheelchair basketball and track and field. The 2007 Melbourne High School graduate suffered injuries while on a foot patrol in Marjah, Afghanistan. He stepped on a pressure plate improvised explosive device and as a result, suffered a below knee amputation and a tibia and fibula fracture on his other leg.
Stearns joined the Corps to help make a difference in the world and to better himself. More than 200 wounded, ill or injured service members from the Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard and Special Operations Command are scheduled to compete in the Paralympic-style competition.
