Cpl. Kionte Storey from Stockton, Calif., will compete in the 2012 Warrior Games in Colorado Springs, Colo., April 30-May 5. Storey, 23, will compete in track and field and swimming. Storey was injured in Afghanistan while serving with 3rd Battalion, 7th Marines, in September 2012. He stepped onto an improvised explosive device, causing him to lose his right leg below the knee. He is currently assigned to Wounded Warrior Battalion West at the Naval Medical Center San Diego Detachment.
Storey said he is honored and inspired to compete with other wounded, ill and injured Marines against other branches of service. He also said that training for the competition helped him get into better shape and hopes to make it to the Paralympics. "It feels good to train with other Marines who also have the uplifting spirit to continue to push despite their injuries." More than 200 wounded, ill or injured service members from the Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard and Special Operations Command are scheduled to compete in the Paralympic-style competition.
