Capt. Richard Rush from Coos Bay, Ore., will compete in the 2012 Warrior Games in Colorado Springs, Colo., April 30-May 5. Rush, 31, will compete in archery, shooting and cycling.
In January 2009, Rush and seven other Marines from 1st Battalion, 3rd Marines were riding in a mine resistant ambush protected vehicle when they were struck by an improvised explosive device. Rush's injuries from his incident included a fractured spine, collapsed lunch, a broken left ankle and damaged vocal cords from shrapnel wounds. After the incident, Rush found out that lessons he learned while in the Marine Corps would help him through his recovery.
"I was never skeptical that I would not recover," said Rush. "Every day, I would work on getting better and stronger. Determination, it can get you through anything." He is currently recovering at the Wounded Warrior Battalion West, Hawaii Detachment.
More than 200 wounded, ill or injured service members from the Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard and Special Operations Command are scheduled to compete in the Paralympic-style competition.
