U.S. Forces build trust through civil affairs engagement in Kenya

CAMP SIMBA, Kenya – U.S. Army Civil Affairs Soldiers assigned to the Southern European Task Force, Africa (SETAF-AF) Civil Affairs Battalion visited Kauthara Primary School near Camp Simba, Kenya, Oct. 16, 2025.
The visit aimed to identify and address civil vulnerabilities in the area while strengthening relationships between U.S. forces and the local community.

“This engagement is a chance for U.S. Civil Affairs to continue identifying and addressing civil vulnerabilities in their area of operations surrounding Camp Simba,” said U.S. Army Sgt. 1st Class Chance Terry, team sergeant for Civil Affairs Team Kenya. “Every interaction we have with the civilian population helps maintain the existing positive sentiment toward U.S. forces.”

Accompanied by Task Force Bataan, the team met with the headmaster, teachers, and community members to discuss ongoing challenges and evaluate the school’s access to clean water and educational supplies. Information gathered during the visit will help inform future engagements and improve the prioritization of resource distribution.

Civil Affairs teams routinely work with community and non-governmental organizations throughout Lamu County to provide targeted support that strengthens education and community stability. By encouraging youth to stay engaged in school, their efforts help reduce the risk of recruitment into criminal or violent extremist organizations and protect young women from gender-based violence, early marriage and other vulnerabilities linked to access to education and support networks.

“Many schools in the area have seen increased attendance rates,” Terry said. “With consistent monitoring, the schools are improving their ability to educate the youth. We’ve also seen an incredible amount of trust between community members and U.S. forces, which helps us better identify and address local challenges.”

The Civil Affairs mission impacts the 475th Expeditionary Air Base Squadron’s ability to project power in Kenya. Through sustained collaboration and trust-building with local leaders, these missions strengthen partnerships and promote long-term security and regional stability across Lamu County.
