John A. Goines III, life support investigator, Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency, sifts through soil during a recovery mission in the Lao People’s Democratic Republic, March 23, 2026. Soil from excavated units are transferred to screening stations where U.S. personnel and local workers search for aircraft wreckage, life support material and possible remains.
