U.S. Marine Staff Sgt. Matthew Sponagle, Explosive Ordnance Disposal technician assigned to the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA), dry-screens dirt with local workers during a DPAA Recovery Mission, March 3, 2023, in Guadalcanal, Solomon Islands. The team uses dry-screening methods to push dirt through screens in order to find possible evidence or osseous linked to unaccounted-for U.S. personnel. Guadalcanal was the location of many important battles in the Pacific Theater during WWII between the Allies and the Japanese, and there are still 5,800 missing U.S. service members in the region.
