First Class Blake Garab, Team Sergeant assigned to the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA), prepares to sharpen a “superman” tool during a recovery mission, Feb. 20, 2023, in Guadalcanal, Solomon Islands. DPAA recovery teams deploy with all the tools and equipment needed to conduct recovery operations in often austere environments and must be able to keep everything operational in order make the most of the time they have on an excavation site. Guadalcanal was the location of many important battles in the Pacific Theater during WWII between the Allies and the Japanese and there are still 5,800 missing U.S. service members in the region.
