Dr. Jason Bush, Scientific Recovery Expert (SRE) with the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA), uses a rangefinder on the bottom of a hill during a recovery mission, Feb. 20, 2023 in Guadalcanal, Solomon Islands. A rangefinder is a device used to measure distances to remote objects and SREs at DPAA use it for surveying as well as to help set up grids for excavation purposes. Guadalcanal was the location of many important battles in the Pacific Theater during WWII between the Allies and the Japanese, and there are still 5,800 missing U.S. service members in the region.
