Dr. Jason Bush, Scientific Recovery Expert with the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA), uses a total station on top of a hill during a DPAA recovery mission, Feb. 20, 2023, in Guadalcanal, Solomon Islands. A total station uses an infrared laser to measure distances and an on-board electronic theodolite to calculate angles to reference points, which is used to map the excavation site on a recovery mission. Guadalcanal was the location of many important battles in the Pacific Theater during WWII between the Allies and the Japanese, and there are still 5,800 missing U.S. service members in the region.
