SFC Robert P. Johnson, Cadet Equestrian Trainer, 9th and 10th Cavalry Regiments, USMA Veterinary Detachment, 1937-1963.
In 2013 the West Point Veterinary Clinic sent us a collection of items from SFC Robert Johnson, who not only was born at West Point, but served 24 of his 29 years on active duty.
Johnson was a third generation Buffalo Soldier and his father and grandfather served as members of the 9th and 10th Cavalry Regiment. After joining the Army in 1934 Johnson was also assigned to the 9th and 10th Cavalry Regiment at West Point in 1937.
Johnson’s duties included cadet equestrian training and cavalry escort details and when the cavalry was disbanded at West Point in 1946, SFC Johnson was assigned to Veterinary detachment until his retirement in 1963.
