John A. Bushemi (April 19, 1917 – February 19, 1944) from Gary, Indiana, stands out as one of World War II’s most courageous combat photographers and filmmakers for Yank, the Army Weekly. After enlisting in June 1941, Bushemi completed basic training at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, where he first worked as a staff photographer in the public relations office. By June 1942, he had joined Yank’s editorial team in New York City, and just months later, was sent to Hawaii to help establish the magazine’s Pacific bureau with correspondent Merle Miller. Tragically, Bushemi lost his life while on assignment at Eniwetok Atoll, killed by mortar fire while he and fellow Yank staffers were on assignment on February 19, 1944. (Public Domain Image)
