During the early morning hours of Aug. 4, 2004, Staff Sgt. Michael Stow, from Running Springs, Calif., secures the outer perimeter of a home in northern Iraq near the Syrian border. The residents are suspected of smuggling weapons into Iraq from Syria and distributing them to terrorist cells throughout Iraq. As a part of Operation Phantom Linebacker, Stow and his fellow Soldiers of 5th Battalion, 20th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division (Stryker Brigade Combat Team) searched several neighborhoods to eliminate the terrorist activity in the area. They detained 20 people for questioning. Terrorists have been suspected of using the region as a haven from which they conduct their attacks. The operation was designed to increase security in the Iraq-Syria border region.
