Staff Sgt. Bill Gonzalez, from Whittier, Calif., searches a room of a house along the Iraq-Syria border on Aug. 4, 2004, in support of Operation Phantom Linebacker. The residents are suspected of smuggling weapons across the border between Iraq and Syria and distributing them to terrorist cells throughout Iraq. Gonzalez and his fellow Soldiers of 5th Battalion, 20th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division (Stryker Brigade Combat Team) participated in the operation designed to help stem the flow of munitions and foreign fighters into Iraq from Syria. Terrorists have been suspected of using the region as a haven from which they conduct their attacks. During this search, Soldiers detained 20 people for questioning.
