Spc. Jason Mediata (right) and Spc. Zane Shuman secure a room in a home west of Sinjar, Iraq, near the Syrian border on Aug. 4, 2004. The residents are suspected of smuggling weapons into Iraq from Syria and distributing them to terrorist cells throughout Iraq. Mediata and Shuman along with fellow Soldiers from Company B, 5th Battalion, 20th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division (Stryker Brigade Combat Team) participated in Operation Phantom Linebacker, an operation designed to help stem the flow of munitions and foreign fighters from Syria. During this search, they detained 20 people for questioning. Terrorists have been suspected of using the region as a haven from which they conduct their attacks.
