Sgt. Jay Hilliard, from Centralia, Wash., searches for weapons and other contraband under pillows in an Iraqi home near the Syrian border on Aug. 4, 2004. Residents of the home are suspected of smuggling weapons and explosives into Iraq from Syria and distributing them to terrorist cells across northern Iraq. Hilliard and Soldiers from Company B, 5th Battalion, 20th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division (Stryker Brigade Combat Team) participated in Operation Phantom Linebacker, an operation designed to stem the flow of munitions and foreign fighters into Iraq from Syria. During this search, they detained 20 people for questioning. Terrorists have been suspected of using the region as a haven from which they conduct their attacks.
