In the early morning hours of Aug. 4, 2004, Pfc. Matthew Cornet secures a courtyard of a home whose residents are suspected of smuggling weapons into Iraq from Syria and distributing them to terrorist cells throughout Iraq. Cornet and his fellow Soldiers of 5th Battalion, 20th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division (Stryker Brigade Combat Team) searched several neighborhoods to eliminate the terrorist activity in the area. They detained 20 people for questioning. The searches were a part of Operation Phantom Linebacker, an operation designed to stop the flow of munitions and foreign fighters from Syria. Terrorists have been suspected of using the region as a haven from which they conduct their attacks.
