Meet DCC Johnathan Zavatsky, 3M Training Manager, who manages the curriculum that teaches future 3MCs how to oversee the Navy’s Maintenance, Material, and Management (3M) System. While at CSS, he is helping turn complicated maintenance systems into real-world Fleet capability.
On any given day, he’s updating curriculum, working with instructors, and ensuring the training material reflects the latest NAVSEA instructions and software updates so that Sailors actually understand how to use systems like SKED, OMMS-NG, and Automated Work Network (AWN) before they ever step onboard. He makes sure the training matches what Sailors will see in the Fleet.
He’s also constantly behind the scenes, stress-testing the curriculum to make sure it holds up under real-world inspections and bringing feedback from the Fleet back into the classroom. If something isn’t working on the deckplates, he’s part of the effort to fix it.
He’ll be the first to tell you this isn’t a “check-the-box” job. Keeping training aligned with constantly changing systems takes real technical knowledge and a lot of behind-the-scenes work - but it directly affects Fleet readiness.
One of his biggest impacts? He has been helping build training for the AWN and overhauling a 3M course that hadn’t been updated in more than a decade. Now, Sailors are learning on the same digital tools they’ll actually use at sea - exactly the kind of innovation and modernization in training the Navy is pushing toward.
Around CSS, he’s known as passionate, hard-working, and loyal. His go-to productivity trick? Eat the frog. I tackle the most complex or "heavy" task on my list - like a difficult curriculum update - first thing in the morning. Once that's out of the way, the rest of the day stays on track.
Off duty, it’s all about family time - usually a movie and a good meal. And somehow, he’s managed to earn a Master’s degree while raising five kids!
Thanks, DCC Zavatsky, for helping keep the Fleet ready for anything!
