Great training doesn’t just grow from trees — it’s built, refined, and continuously improved behind the scenes.
As an Instructional Systems Specialist (ISS), Gresh Barrett Laing plays a key role in developing the curriculum used to train current and future Navy leaders. By working closely with Subject Matter Experts, he turns real-world knowledge into structured, effective training that instructors across the Fleet rely on every day.
But his role goes beyond maintaining content — Mr. Laing is actively pushing innovation at the Center for Service Support (CSS). He’s leading efforts to integrate AI into curriculum development, creating processes that dramatically reduce development time while improving the quality of training materials. He’s even working on a standalone system that uses advanced AI to support both Instructional Systems Specialists and SMEs in building and updating courses.
One thing he wants people to understand? The ISS role isn’t just about reviewing or “quality checking” content—it’s about creating it. From the ground up, ISS professionals are fully capable of designing and delivering the curriculum that drives Fleet readiness.
At the end of the day, Gresh’s work ensures instructors have the tools they need to properly train Sailors—helping build a stronger, more prepared Navy.
Outside of work, you’ll find him immersed in music—playing in bands, rehearsing, and jumping into jam sessions around New England (with some pickleball on the side).
Thank you, Gresh, for driving innovation and helping shape the future of Navy training!
