The operator in the loading machine, once logs are stacked for transport, uses a specially made branding hammer, which identifies where the timber came from. The yellow paint marks them as belonging to Sierra Pacific Industries and ensures they won't be exported. Timber and logging companies, Sierra Pacific Industries and Peterson Timber, work an active timber harvest sale in the McBride Plantation area just southwest of Mount Shasta on the Shasta-Trinity National Forest in February 2023. The companies won bids to cut trees within the 3,000-acre area, build bundles for chipping, and transport their material to their mills or staging area. (USDA Forest Service photo by Paul Wade)
