American Forests, the USDA Forest Service, CAL FIRE, and California Cone Corps hosted a Cone Camp on June 28-29, 2023 in Yreka, California. More than 60 cone collection personnel gathered at a hotel for an introduction to cone, seed, reforestation, genetics, monitoring and sampling information. Shelley Villalobos and Luis Vidal from American Forests, Denia Troxell from CAL FIRE, and Wade Bell and Scott Kolpak from the USDA Forest Service, provided a presentation. Participants from various non-profits, state, private and government organizations learned why there is a need for seed and some background regarding the reforestation pipeline. On Day 2 Cone Camp was held at the Sierra Pacific Industries orchard in Gazelle, a few miles north of Mount Shasta. Here cone hunters learned how to identify species, cone ripeness, how to collect cones, cut and examine. (USDA Forest Service photo by Paul Wade)
