An excavator digs through a unit during a recovery mission on Guadalcanal, Solomon Islands, July 22, 2024. The dirt is carried to a truck which then transports it to the geographically separated wet-screen station. The recovery team sifts through dirt in search of possible osseous material or material evidence to help locate missing personnel lost during the Guadalcanal Campaign in World War II. There are approximately 72,000 missing personnel unaccounted-for from World War II. Of those, 374 are unaccounted-for from Guadalcanal. (U.S. Air Force photo by Staff Sgt. Ariel Owings)
