Local Solomon Islanders work with Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA) personnel to place sandbags within an excavation site during a recovery mission on Guadalcanal, Solomon Islands, Aug. 6, 2024. Sandbags are used to line the perimeter of each unit within an archaeological grid to protect the inner walls during excavation or heavy rain. DPAA’s humanitarian mission has a significant role in the Department of Defense’s efforts to build partnerships in the Indo-Pacific region and around the world. There are approximately 72,000 missing personnel unaccounted-for from World War II. Of those, 374 are unaccounted-for from Guadalcanal. (U.S. Air Force photo by Staff Sgt. Ariel Owings)
