Dave Brown, Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency scientific recovery expert (SRE), shows a compass to Ministry of National Defense Agency for Killed in Action Recovery Identification (MAKRI) personnel during a recovery mission in South Korea, May 29, 2024. Members of the U.S. Department of Defense, MAKRI, and the Republic of Korea Army combined their efforts and knowledge to conduct recovery operations in South Korea. The SRE on mission is the deciding authority for site operations, assisted by the recovery team leader and team sergeant. There are approximately 7,400 unaccounted-for personnel from the Korean War.
