Tim Awaya, longtime outrigger canoe paddling enthusiast, carries his 20-pound, 20-foot long canoe to the water before the start of the Paddling Athletes Association Thanksgiving Food Drive Race Nov. 17, 2012, in Hawaii Kai, Hawaii. Awaya, paddling coach and friend to Master Sgt. Jeff Allen, Pacific Air Forces Headquarters Public Affairs photojournalist, urged Allen to enter his first race. The annual charity food drive race starts in Hawaii Kai, goes past Diamond Head crater and finishes at Kaimana. Awaya finished the eight-and-a-half-mile race in 1:05:52.
