Spc. John Cunningham, a scout with B Troop, 1-18th Cavalry, 79th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, and a native of Poway, Calif., receives the Soldier of the Year trophy from Maj. Gen. David Baldwin, the adjutant general of the California National Guard, on the main stage at the 2012 Best Warrior Competition award ceremony Oct. 23 at the Joint Forces Training Base in Los Alamitos, Calif. Cunningham won Soldier of the Year and the Army Physical Fitness Test, obstacle course and rock wall events at the Best Warrior Competition held during Sept. 11-17 at Camp San Luis Obispo, Calif.
