Demetrius McCowan (right), sheet metal aircraft structural mechanic with the 1106th Theater Aviation Sustainment Maintenance Group and a native of Fresno, Calif., receives the Non-commissioned Officer of the Year trophy from Maj. Gen. David Baldwin, the adjutant general of the California National Guard, on the main stage at the 2012 Best Warrior Competition award ceremony Oct. 23 at the Joint Forces Training Base in Los Alamitos, Calif. McCowan won awards for NCO of the Year and first place in the weapons course for NCOs and the combatives tournament for NCOs events at the Best Warrior Competition held during Sept. 11-17 at Camp San Luis Obispo, Calif.
