Anniston, Ala., was the site for the 2016 Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps National Air Rifle Championships held on March 17-19 at the Civilian Marksmanship Program Range. The competition consisted of more than 200 high school students on 56 teams from 73 high schools nationwide. Through various previous competitions, the participating schools earned the right to shoot at the National Championship. Individual winners in either the Sporter or Precision categories receive medals and cash prizes as well as the attention of university recruiters whose schools also have riflery as a scholarship sport. Team winners receive money for their respective programs. Pictured here, is a Precision-class rifle and the monitor the shooter can see during a match so they can track where their shots hit the small target about 45.5 centimeters in diameter and 10 meters (33 feet) away.
