Fode, a Hazelton, North Dakota, native, and her husband, Sgt. Maj. Rick L. Fode, second from right, retired at the same ceremony. Each served more than 20 years in the Marine Corps. Nelson is the commanding general of 3rd MLG, III Marine Expeditionary Force. Sgt. Maj. Rick L. Fode was the sergeant major of Headquarters and Headquarters Squadron, Marine Corps Air Station Futenma.
