Qualified, trained lookouts are the U.S. Navy's first line of defense to protect marine species and the environment from potential harm during at-sea activities. These Sailors are responsible for reporting any potential marine species sightings up their chain of command, which helps ensure the Navy is operating in a safe manner that does not impact marine species in accordance with federal law.
