Naval Base Kitsap Cuts Ribbon on New Child Development Center, Adds 204 childcare spaces to capacity
SILVERDALE, Wash. – Naval Base Kitsap (NBK) leaders, Sailors, civilian team members and families gathered Tuesday to cut of the ribbon on the new NBK-Bangor Child Development Center (CDC).
This new state-of-the-art facility will add 204 much-needed spaces for children of military personnel in the region – nearly double the capacity of the CDC it replaced. The 16 classrooms in the new center will open across three phases starting October 1, with a full facility opening projected for early January 2027. The CDC will support children from 6-weeks to 5-years old.
"A strong community is built on the well-being of its families,” said Capt. Alex Baerg, commanding officer of Naval Base Kitsap. “This new Child Development Center is a clear demonstration of our commitment to supporting our service members and their loved ones. It’s an investment in our children's future and our readiness, and we are thrilled to see the positive impact it will have for years to come."
The new childcare center is a critical component of the Navy's commitment to supporting service members and their families, and a key project under the Chief of Naval Operations' "Sailors First" initiative. This expansion is a direct response to the high demand for quality, affordable childcare and is vital for the readiness of military families.
"Our Navy families serve alongside our Sailors, and ensuring they have access to dependable, high-quality childcare is one of our highest priorities,” said Vice Adm. Scott Gray, Commander, Navy Installations Command.“Improving Quality of Service across the shore enterprise means removing everyday burdens from our personnel. Facilities like this new CDC at Naval Base Kitsap are critical to strengthening family resilience, enhancing retention, and supporting the Fleet."
Every room and outdoor space in this center has been thoughtfully designed with features specifically geared towards the age group it serves. These design elements are critical components that ensure a safe, welcoming and inclusive environment for the children and support the staff in their mission to provide exceptional care for our military families.
“What you see here is a result of intentionality, creativity and commitment,” said Claudette Mohn, NBK Installation Child and Youth Programs director, adding, “This (CDC) is an example of the commitment from our leadership and everyone who (was involved).”
The project's accelerated timeline is a testament to the dedication and efficient work of the NAVFAC Northwest team and its contracting partners. The same crews working the Bangor CDC began constructing the Jackson Park CDC earlier this year, using the best practices they learned along the way at Bangor to expedite construction with another anticipated early finish.

Bob Stiles, NAVFAC Northwest commanding officer. “Reliable childcare provides Sailors the peace of mind to focus on their missions, strengthens family readiness, and demonstrates our continued commitment to taking care of our people.”
